VetsForever Launches National Mental Health Campaign Amid VA Disability Rating Updates
March 11, 2026
VetsForever Law Group has launched a national mental health awareness campaign aimed at closing the gap between eligibility and access to VA disability benefits. CEO and 100% disabled Navy veteran Trinidad Aguirre argues in his white paper, Empowering Veterans to Heal, Thrive, and Reclaim Their Potential, that VA disability benefits mirror Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs — serving as a foundation for healing, dignity, and long-term well-being.
The campaign comes as the VA updates its mental health disability criteria expected to take effect this year. Yet more than 30% of eligible veterans never apply for benefits, and 61% of veterans who died by suicide in 2023 were not receiving VA health care in the last year of their life.
As part of the campaign, VetsForever is launching Beyond the Rating, a new YouTube series offering veterans guidance on navigating the VA disability process and accessing the benefits they've earned. On April 1 in San Francisco, Aguirre will also moderate a veteran mental health policy panel at the CCME Annual Symposium featuring Wendy Lasko of Columbia Lighthouse Project, Tina Atherall of PsychArmor, Dr. Elisa Borah of the University of Texas at Austin, and Charles Bischoff of NextOp Veterans.
"If we are serious about long-term recovery, the disability evaluation system must be clear, accessible, and responsive to the realities veterans face." — Trinidad Aguirre, CEO, VetsForever Law Group
