Olivia K: My Story of service, transition and finding purpose beyond the uniform

A Leap of Faith That Changed My Life

My decision to join the Air Force came on a whim. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, I never imagined that one day I’d be supporting remote combat operations around the world as an intelligence analyst. But that leap—taken without knowing exactly where it would lead—turned out to be the most defining decision of my adult life.

The Air Force gave me so much more than a job. It gave me purpose, personal growth, and friendships that I’ll carry with me forever. Some of my most cherished memories don’t come from the missions I worked on, but from the people I served alongside—friends who became family and experiences that shaped me into who I am today.

Transitioning Out: Rebuilding My Identity After Service

When it was time to transition out of active duty, I found myself asking the same questions many veterans do: What’s next? Who am I without the uniform? Stepping away from the close-knit military environment I had known for years was emotional and overwhelming.

Thankfully, through the DOD SkillBridge program and with the help of 7 Eagle Group, I found a path forward. 7 Eagle connected me to an opportunity with VetsForever, where I spent the final six months of my service learning and working alongside a team that truly understood veterans. It offered me a soft landing—a way to ease into civilian life without losing my sense of mission or community. After I separated from the military, VetsForever offered me a full-time role.

Even with a strong support system and meaningful work, the transition was still difficult. There were moments of loneliness, and I wrestled with the emotional weight of leaving behind my military identity. But I also realized how much I had grown—and that I wanted to carry that growth into the next chapter of my life.

A New Way to Serve

Today, I serve fellow veterans as a Veteran Advocate with VetsForever. In this role, I help guide others through the VA claims process—working to ensure they receive the benefits they’ve earned.

Supporting veterans in their post-service journey has become one of my proudest accomplishments. This work is deeply personal to me. It provides a renewed sense of purpose and connection that mirrors my time in uniform. Every veteran’s story deserves to be heard, and I’m honored to walk alongside others as they navigate the road ahead.

Strength in Support

I wouldn’t be where I am today without my support system—especially my mom. She’s been with me through every choice, challenge, and turning point. Her unwavering encouragement has been a steady force in my life, helping me keep moving forward even when things felt uncertain.

I’m also incredibly grateful to the VetsForever community. They’ve created a space where I feel seen, valued, and supported. Re-entering civilian life isn’t easy—but having the right people behind you makes all the difference.

Why I Share My Story

I’m sharing my story not for recognition, but to remind others that they’re not alone. My journey—from small-town girl to Air Force analyst to veteran advocate—is just one thread in the fabric of our veteran community.
